Raising the Profile of Your State’s Wildlife Action Plan
Photomorgue

Because these Wildlife Action Plans are so new, there is a need to tell people about them, including elected officials, and policy makers. Your coalition can raise the profile of and build support for the Wildlife Action Plan by briefing the governor, Congressional Delegation and legislative leaders on your state's plan. You can start by identifying your state’s Members of Congress, members of the state legislature and other key decision makers the coalition will visit.  Plan to visit congressional districts where delegates are on appropriations committees and where your state fish and wildlife agency already has successful restoration projects on the ground that will showcase the intention of the State Wildlife Action Plan and are funded by the State Wildlife Grants Program.  You can also target districts located within regions identified in the Wildlife Action Plan as a high conservation priority.  Talk with your state fish and wildlife agency representative to find out where these priority areas are located.

During these visits, you should start with the basics:  highlight the opportunities in the plan for proactive species and habitat conservation.  Describe restoration projects that have already been completed in your state through the State Wildlife Grants Program. And of course, mention the economic and recreational benefits the plan will bring to the state.
