Wildlife Funding In Congress
From the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act to the State Wildlife Grants program, wildlife conservation has always enjoyed strong bipartisan support in Congress. The State Wildlife Grants program currently provides funding for wildlife conservation on annual basis. Several long-term funding bills, which would provide a dedicated source of funds to the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program, have been proposed in this Congress.
State Wildlife Grants
Created by Congress in 2001, the State Wildlife Grants program is our nation's core program for keeping wildlife from becoming endangered. The program provides annual funding for on-the-ground conservation projects in every state and territory. Check out the State Wildlife Grants Five-Year Accomplishment Report to learn more about the projects funded through this core program.
President Bush's 2008 Budget Proposal includes $69.5 million for the State Wildlife Grants Program. This is a $2 million increase from the FY 07 funding level passed by congress, but falls short of the $74.7 million President Bush recommended last year. The Teaming with Wildlife Coalition is calling for $85 million for the State Wildlife Grants Program in 2008 and Dear Colleague letters in both House and Senate are being circulated in support of this higher figure.
