Bat Studies in Mississippi

Alison McCartney

Out of the 14 bat species found in Mississippi, 2 are endangered and 7 more are species of concern.  Loss of habitat has not only affected foraging areas, but has also significantly limited nursery roosts.  The objective of this project is to study habitat and roost preferences for bats and evaluate the feasibility of enhancing bat populations by providing artificial bat roosting shelters.  Increased concern for this group of mammals has led to the creation of the Mississippi Bat Working Group, an organization of nearly 100 biologists and interested citizens working together.
