Mississippi’s wildlife is a resource worthy of protection in the state. In the past, federal funding targeted game species or species that have declined to the point that recovery is difficult to achieve. A lack of funding dedicated to the conservation of nongame wildlife has limited efforts to comprehensively address the decline of species in Mississippi. Currently the list of Animals of Special Concern in Mississippi includes 18 amphibians, 70 birds, 34 crustaceans, 74 fish, 17 mammals, 49 mussels and 35 reptiles.
Since 1996 the Mississippi Wildlife Federation has supported increased funding for non-game species research and protection. Our efforts, along with other Teaming With Wildlife partners, has led to federal funding through the State Wildlife Grants program. Since 2001 Congress has appropriated $4.2 million to Mississippi with an additional $2.9 million in matching money from state and private partners.
The Teaming With Wildlife partners are pleased with the progress made thus far, but more needs to be done to protect our precious resources.
