SUCCESS STORIES
Stocking American Shad
American Shad Restoration
Thadey/DCFWD

One fish, two fish, red fish,...a million fish! The DDOE fisheries biologists were busy in the spring of 2007. They captured adult American shad from the Potomac River downstream of Washington, DC. Eggs from ripe females were collected and fertilized and brought back to the Aquatic Resources Education Center where the DC Fish Hatchery is located. The fertilized eggs were hatched out and the young fry were stocked in the upper reaches of the Anacostia River. In addition to the approximately one million American shad stocked in DC, an estimated 70,000 hickory shad and 300,000 blue back herring fry were stocked in the upper reaches of Rock Creek in DC. The American shad, hickory shad, and blue back herring are all Species of Greatest Conservation Need listed in the DC Wildlife Action Plan. This conservation action addresses the threat, lack of quality spawning and nursery habitat, listed in the DC Wildlife Action Plan.
