"Honk if you're a DC resident." Today that statement might elicit a response from more than just people along the Anacostia River. The area supports an increasing population of non-native, resident Canada geese that have degraded existing wetlands through intense browsing pressure and hampered wetland restoration efforts. DDOE (Div of Fisheries and Wildlife and Watershed Protection) has been working with the National Park Service, Anacostia Watershed Society, and USDA's Wildlife Services and National Arboretum to manage the Canada goose in DC. District employees have served on a committee to develop an Environmental Assessment for the National Park Service. They have also assisted in monitoring Canada goose populations, conducted management activities to slow the population growth of the residents, and restored native tidal marshes along the Anacostia River. This work will directly and indirectly effect both native plant and animal diversity, including Species of Greatest Conservation Need, like the sora.
