Maryland supports a significant portion of the northern bog turtle population. This threatened species occupies bog and fen wetland complexes, which is one of the key wildlife habitats in Maryland. Most of the bog turtle habitat occurs within a rapidly developing area of the State and these nontidal wetlands are subjected to numerous threats. Invasion by woody vegetation is a serious problem at many bog turtle sites. Habitat restoration efforts through the removal of young trees and shrubs within the wetlands were completed at 10 sites and bog turtle population response to these management efforts are being monitored. This has been a colloborative effort with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Environmental Defense.
