What is Teaming With Wildlife?

• National Teaming With Wildlife is a coalition of more than 5,000 organizations (including parks, conservation clubs, businesses, and more) working to prevent wildlife from becoming endangered by supporting increased state and federal funding for wildlife conservation.

What are State Wildlife Action Plans?

• Game species are funded through hunter and angler license fees and federal excise taxes from the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Programs.  The Endangered Species Act provides focused funding for restoring species that are threatened or endangered.  However, 80% of our nation’s wildlife is not hunted, fished, or endangered.  Where is their funding?

• Congress and the Administration created the State Wildlife Grants Program five years ago.  This provides federal money to every state for wildlife conservation efforts.  The state is then required to match a percentage of the funds.  Congress has appropriated a total of $6.4 million in State Wildlife Grants to Indiana since 2001.  This has been matched with at least $3.5 million state and partner dollars. 

• To make the best use of this money, Congress charged each state with developing a Statewide Wildlife Action Plan. This plan addresses Indiana's most critical wildlife issues, including endagered species and habitat loss, and outlines the steps necessary to address these issues. Indiana's plan was approved in August 2006.

How can you help?

• The amount of money granted to states is decided on a yearly basis.  The federal budget is always tight, and your help is needed to ensure that funding for wildlife conservation remains a priority every year. 

• By signing the Teaming With Wildlife endorsement form, your organization will become a member of the national Teaming With Wildlife Coalition and be listed as a supporter for dedicated funding for Indiana’s non-game wildlife.
